Course description:
Workshop aim and approach
There is increased recognition of the role of local government in determining the health of populations, and there is evidence that health impact assessment (HIA) can play a positive role in assisting local government to enhance health. This workshop will link HIA to the work of local government in differing jurisdictions in the Asia Pacific region. Participants will develop a picture of the core business of local government throughout the Asia Pacific, and the relationship of local government to health across the region. The workshop will be interactive, featuring case studies from across the region, presentations, small group work and large group discussion.
Participants likely to benefit from attending the workshop include people with experience using HIA, people working in local government, and people interested in progressing the use of HIA in local government.
Workshop objectives
At the end of the workshop participants will have a greater awareness of:
the impact of local government on the determinants of the health of populations
practical examples of the use of HIA to assist local governments in developing and implementing healthy public policy, programs and services
capacity required by local government to conduct HIA efficiently and effectively, including roles, resources and support.
Workshop requirements
- Basic knowledge of HIA
- Intermediate-advanced proficiency in spoken English
- Willingness to work in small groups throughout workshop
