The Dam Projects on the Mae Kong river and their Health Impacts

Water management policy in the Mae Kong river basin is the policy that cause trans-boundary health impacts, especially the hydropower dam projects along the Mae Kong river and the water diversion project to the north-eastern Thailand. Mae Kong Social Research centre, thus, held the forum to discuss health impact of these projects, development options, and the applications of HIA to promote healthy water management policy. The forum analyzed the approach to assert community rights based on national constitution and national health act and agreed to organize the HIA in different levels, from community HIA, project-based HIA, and trans-boundary HIA. The forum also suggested to organize special session in the HIA 2008 conference to further discuss on this issue and search for the opportunity for research collaboration on this issue.
