Developing Community Health Impact Assessment (CHIA)
Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a social learning process and tool for the development of healthy public policy. In Thailand, HIA development was initiated since the health systems reform in 2000 and was subsequently legislated under Section 67 of the national constitution B.E.2550 and Section 11 of the national health act B.E.2550. This is therefore an important starting point for setting HIA mechanisms and creating learning process towards the active practice of HIA across Thai society.
National Health Commission Office, in collaboration with Healthy Public Policy Foundation and Khon Kaen Universitys Research and Development Institute, have valued the development of HIA knowledge and networking and have organized trainings on Developing Community Health Impact Assessment (CHIA) which are the continuing course for civil society sector. The course aims at promoting the concept and understanding of HIA as well as strengthening the capacity of communities in applying HIA concept and tools to prevent and solve the impacts of public policies.
Two trainings were held during 7-9 April 2008 at Cholapruksa Resort, Nakhon Nayok province and during 22-25 July 2008 at Baan Thip Suan Thong, Samut Songkram province with 50 participants from several parts of the country. After the course, the participants can also apply for funding from the National Health Commission Office to support their working process on CHIA.
